Fish killing is one of the largest issues facing the Neuse River. In 1995 a few million fished died and were washed ashore. In 2009 an estimated 100 million died between the months of August and September. This was all due to poor water quality from pollution. Organzations like the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation are trying to, "Restore and perserve the Neuse River basin through education, advocacy and enforcement, in order to provide clean water for drinking, recreation and enjoyment to the communities that it serves."
